Warrenton is a small city of 4,500 located on the north coast of Oregon, where the Columbia River flows into the Pacific. It includes Fort Stevens State Park, and along with its' sister city Astoria, it makes up a nationally significant historic region at the western end of the Lewis & Clark Trail. Visitors will find spectacular scenery in Warrenton; wide, clean beaches and a temperate rain forest at the mouth of the Columbia River. Across Youngs Bay from Warrenton is Astoria, which is the oldest settlement west of the Rockies. Astoria has been called "The Little San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest," and features a revitalized 1920s era downtown area and dozens of picturesque Victorian homes clinging to steep wooded hillsides. Although unspoiled and uncrowded, both Warrenton and Astoria offer first-class attractions, restaurants and accommodations. Places to visit include the Warrenton Riverwalk, Fort Clatsop, the Columbia River Maritime Museum and the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. More than 200 shipwrecks have occurred near the mouth of the Columbia River at Warrenton, and it has become known as "The Graveyard of the Pacific." One shipwreck, the Peter Iredale of 1906, is still visible on the beach at Fort Stevens State Park. The park also contains Oregon's largest campground, along with nature trails, picnic facilities, biking, horseback riding and swimming, and the Fort Stevens Museum.

Warrenton Weather & Climate

Oregon's North Coast has the least sunshine of any area in the state but the gorgeous scenery more than makes up for the lack of sunshine. The northwest region is a heavily timbered area with lots of rainfall much of the year, resulting in lush pastures and rich farmland. Along the coast, the average annual snowfall is only one to three inches, with many years in which there is no measurable amount at all. Thunderstorms can occur in the valleys, but are usually not severe. Major flooding occurs in the coastal streams as a result of several days of moderate to heavy rain. Melting of a heavy snow pack on the Coast Range and/or the Cascades greatly increases the flood potential. The only other severe weather conditions on the Oregon coast are hailstorms, which are generally light and cover very small areas, and occasional high winds.
